Not usually. Sensors for Triangulation and Monitoring strategies usually install in hallway. In a confirmation scenario, it is possible. It depends on the power access and the suspected source of the odour.
Is this legal? What about privacy?
Yes. Our sensors detect airborne particulates in common areas only — the same air anyone walking the hallway breathes. There is no audio, no video, from inside any unit. Engagements are conducted with explicit board and/or management authorization.
How sensitive are the sensors?
Very sensitive. They detect specific airborne particules associated with cannabis, smoking, and vaping. They are not sensitive to the presence of other gases or vapours. The first couple of days after installation, we need calibrate to prevent false positives.
What if the source moves around, or there is multiple sources?
This can complicate the process. We can usually isolate the source within the initial 14-day window. Complex cases — multiple suspect units, sporadic activity — may extend an additional 1-3 weeks with continued sensor relocation.
Will the report hold up in enforcement proceedings?
Our standard summary is suitable for board minutes and resident communication. For tribunal or legal proceedings we recommend the optional notarized report that is signed by the analysing technician. This a relatively new area of law, so there are not many cases yet to guide the process.
How long until we have an answer?
Most engagements isolate the source within the initial 14-day window. Complex cases — multiple suspect units, sporadic activity — may extend an additional 1-3 weeks with continued sensor relocation.
What buildings can you work in?
Any multi-dwelling unit building with shared interior hallways and standard ceiling light fixtures — condos, co-ops, mid-rise and high-rise rentals.
What happens if the sensor is stolen or damaged?
We offer option insurance for the sensor. If purchased, then the sensor will be replaced at no cost to the client. Otherwise, the client will be responsible for the cost of the replacement sensor.
What does the sensor look like?
We keep the sensor locations and visual descriptions confidential to make them harder to identify. Upon a casual inspection, the sensor is not remarkable.
Can you detect outdoor sources?
Our sensors are designed to detect airborne particulates in enclosed areas only. If the source is suspected to be outside, we can place a sensor near the entrance point (window, etc.) to try and confirm. However, these results are less conclusive.
